Call for Artists – City of West Lafayette Traffic Signal Box Wraps

The City of West Lafayette Public Art Team is seeking design submissions from artists that will be reproduced on vinyl wraps for several traffic boxes in the West Lafayette community. This project builds on the success WLPAT’s prior traffic box project completed in 2019 that enhanced three boxes along North Salisbury Street between Kalberer Road and Navajo Drive. Artists may propose new or existing artwork for consideration; however, existing artwork is preferred.

The West Lafayette Public Art Team will select proposals based upon artistic merit, implementation feasibility, appropriateness to public placement, and design. Each submitted design will be reviewed independently by the WLPAT, unless the artist specifies that a subset of his or her design are thematic and should be reviewed together. The PAT will then work with the selected artist to finish the concept and have the work recreated on the boxes by a professional company. The deadline to apply is April 16, 2021 at 11:59 pm  (EST), Interested applicants should review the full Request for Proposals document found here.

The selected artist(s) will receive $250 per traffic box, up to $1,250 if the same artist is selected for all five. Payment will be provided upon delivery of the final design(s).

Designs submitted should:

  • Draw inspiration from West Lafayette’s community, its growth, and its environmental/physical change;
  • Be relatable, original, and respectful of diverse community users; and,
  • Be eye-catching and created in consideration of their eventual reproduction on boxes that can be seen by passerby traveling at an average 30 mph, i.e. the design should contain one primary subject or focus (see examples below).

To submit your design, please complete the application found below no later than April 16, 2021 at 11:59 pm (EST). Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Applications will be juried by the West Lafayette Public Arts Team. Artist(s) selected for the project will be notified by May 31, 2021, if not sooner. The selected artist(s) will be invited to participate in the dedication of the installation.
